In his new book, Professor Gönenç Gürkaynak dissects the complex relationship between competition and innovation, and attempts to optimize intervention in merger control, advocating for a case-by-case analysis under certain principles explored in the book. He powerfully challenges presumptions in merger control, based on his analysis of 80 merger control decisions in three major jurisdictions, and exhaustive research on academic literature.

Dr. Gönenç Gürkaynak, our founding partner and head of ELIG Gürkaynak’s competition law and regulatory team, spoke at the EU Merger Control 2023 Conference panel entitled “Managing Multijurisdictional Mergers: Is there Greater Divergence of Approaches by the Regulators?” organised by Informa Connect in Brussels on September 28, 2023. Mr. William Leslie (Partner, Linklaters) moderated the session and the other speakers included Ms. Naomi Burgoyne (Director, Mergers, Competition and Markets Authority (CMA)) and Ms. Catherine Higgs (Legal Director UK & Ireland and Global Competition Law Head, GSK).

Dr. Gönenç Gürkaynak, our founding partner and head of ELIG Gürkaynak’s competition law and regulatory team, moderated the Legal 500 webinar entitled “Innovation Theories of Harm in Merger Control” on Thursday, October 19, 2023. The speakers of the webinar included Prof. David J. Teece (Professor in Global Business at the University of California's Haas School of Business (Berkeley)) and Prof. Damien Geradin (Founding Partner of Geradin Partners, Professor of Competition Law & Economics at Tilburg University, Visiting Professor of Law at University College London).
